Are Your Baby’s Clothes Giving Them a Chemical Burn?
Posted on 15. Sep, 2008 by Trish in Uncategorized
I just read about a very important issue over at Z Recommends. It appears that some of the tagless clothing from the Carter’s brand contains a chemical that is actually creating a rash on some babies! Most of the incidents are happening in their fall of 2007 line.
This is what Carter’s said in response to the inquiry from Z Recommends:
Carter’s is aware of several reports from consumers whose children have experienced skin reactions while wearing apparel products containing heat-transferred, or “tagless” labels. Some of these products have been identified as Carter’s products. We want to assure our customers that we take this matter seriously and are doing everything we can to ensure their continued confidence in and satisfaction with our products.Carter’s has used different types of heat transferred labels for many years on hundreds of millions of products. Our experience with these labels is that they are safe and that any skin reaction is extremely rare. Regardless, we take our quality control very seriously and carefully review all consumer concerns. Prior to being used in our products, these labels passed third-party testing for all applicable safety standards.
Since this issue came to our attention, we have contacted the label manufacturer to further review the manufacturing process, and we are conducting further testing and have engaged experts to determine the source of the skin reactions, which we currently believe to be a rare allergic reaction. Because of design trends, the features and appearance of our labels change frequently. In fact, before receiving any of the recent complaints, these labels underwent further design and feature changes for our new product season.
Your feedback and comments are important to us. We encourage you to contact us at 1-888-782-9548 with any questions or concerns you may have with any Carter’s products.
Well, how do you know which clothes are from the fall 2007 line? Apparently they have a larger tag. If you look at the picture above, the tag in the bottom onesies is from the fall 2007 line. See the difference in size vs the two right above them? It has the large white block, and uses more ink, thus more chemicals. The two up top don’t have the large white block. If you would like to read the whole story, go here.
I have a lot of Carter’s clothing and my daughter was actually wearing one today. So I checked, and sure enough, it had the larger tag, meaning it is from the Fall 2007 line. Now, not all babies develop a rash or irritation from this, and my daughter never has, so I am not concerned. I will watch to see if she does develop a rash, and if she does, you can bet I’ll be taking all my Carter’s clothes back! You can contact Carter’s at the number above if you have noticed any rash with your babies, and I believe they are giving a full refund for any returned items.
I just wanted to thank Z Recommends for providing us with this information! I never would have thought about the tagless clothing giving my daughter a rash!
UPDATE: I was reading a little more into this, and it’s not just the Carter’s brand that is causing burns. It can be any tagless clothing. If you would like to read other people’s stories about this issue, you can read through the comments on this Z Rec’s article.
So what are your opinions? Are you going to return any Carter’s clothing, even if your kid isn’t getting a rash? Have you lost your faith in Carter’s completely? Are you going to buy tagless clothing for your kids? I want to know what you think.

Katelynn has had a rash on the back of her neck area off and on and I have been wondering what has been causing it. The other day I thought, ” I wonder if it is the tags in her clothes?” I will have to watch and see which ones do that to her. Thanks for the info! I love your sight!
