How to Make a Halter Tutu Dress: Version 2

Posted on 13. Nov, 2008 by Trish in Tutorial

A little while back, I wrote a post on how to make a halter tutu dress. I showed how to make two layers by tying them one at a time.

Well, since then I have figured out how to make the two layers using one single knot.

First, criss-cross the two colors.

Then pull the ends of the same colors together.
Place the layer underneath the elastic, with the top color on top
(this is what it would look like on the back of the elastic)

Then tie the tulle in a square knot.

This is what it looks like on the back of the elastic.

If you want more detail instruction on how to make a halter tutu dress, make sure to check out my first post. This one is just an alternate way to make a layered dress. You don’t have to make one layer shorter than the other like I did in this tutu dress, but you can if you want. Some people like to use two different colors, like a pink and a white, and this will create those two separate colors, also making it a reversible tutu. One day you can wear it with the white on top, and another with the pink on top, for example. Or you could mix up the colors to make it look more subtle. I’m trying to make one with flowers too to show you what that would look like. Once again you can finish the top with a boa, flowers, or even ribbon.

Here is a reversible tutu I made, with dark pink on the top, and light pink on the bottom.

I am attempting to make a dress like the expensive ones on the boutique websites, and want to add flowers to the top where the ribbon halter is. Your post says they can be added, but I am not really a crafty person and am not sure exactly how to get on a few silk flowers so that they stay on tightly and the dress still goes on ok, without being scratchy or an irritation for my 1 yr old. Do you have ideas? Thanks

I’ve been inspired by a website, miss sugar pops. I am trying to recreate the denim tutu. Do you think this would be the right tutu for this project?

Thanks for the instructions on the layered tutus. I have racked my brains trying to figure out how to do it. I really want to do a 3 layer tutu so how doyou think I would add the third layer? do you think I should do the two layers together how you show and then do a third by itself (for the very top shortest layer) like you did in your previous tutu instuction? or should I do it with the two layers and then on the back of the tutu (the inside of the band) slip a bottom layer using the tie from the previous layers as the anchor instead of the elastic…so basically tie it to the other two instead of adding more bulk on the elastic. What do you think? Thanks for the instructions! I appreciate it!

Wendy, I have never really tried a 3 layer tutu, but I think either way you mentioned would probably work. I’d say try one way, and if you don’t like it, try another! That’s really how I figured out how to do these, simply by trial and error. Good luck!
