How to Make a Halter Tutu Dress: Version 2
Posted on 13. Nov, 2008 by Trish in Tutorial
A little while back, I wrote a post on how to make a halter tutu dress. I showed how to make two layers by tying them one at a time.
Well, since then I have figured out how to make the two layers using one single knot.
First, criss-cross the two colors.
Then pull the ends of the same colors together.
Place the layer underneath the elastic, with the top color on top
(this is what it would look like on the back of the elastic)
Then tie the tulle in a square knot.

This is what it looks like on the back of the elastic.
If you want more detail instruction on how to make a halter tutu dress, make sure to check out my first post. This one is just an alternate way to make a layered dress. You don’t have to make one layer shorter than the other like I did in this tutu dress, but you can if you want. Some people like to use two different colors, like a pink and a white, and this will create those two separate colors, also making it a reversible tutu. One day you can wear it with the white on top, and another with the pink on top, for example. Or you could mix up the colors to make it look more subtle. I’m trying to make one with flowers too to show you what that would look like. Once again you can finish the top with a boa, flowers, or even ribbon.

how did you add the bow? And can you use ribbon instead of elastic?

I just tied the bow on. And yes you can use ribbon instead of elastic.

Have you tried using ribbon instead of elastic so the tutu can be tied in the back? Do you think that would even work? I was going to try it, but wanted to see if it was even possible.

I haven’t tried it, but I know some people do it like this, so you can definitely try it!

Do you spray the tule with anything to keep it from bunching up and sticking together??? That is the problem I am having with my tutu’s and was wondering if there is something out there I can use to prevent this. Any suggestions???

That is just how tulle is. Tutus are best for wearing for short periods of time like for pictures.

I’m not sure, as I have never added a liner. I’ve thought about it a little, but haven’t come up with an easy way to do it. The easiest would be to take a piece of material that is the length you want it, and a little wider than the chest measurements. Sew that together to form a tube, and then fold the top over to form a casing for elastic. Add the elastic, and then sew the casing shut. Then she would wear that underneath the tutu. So it’s not connected to the tutu itself, but it would still work.

Thanks so much for these instructions! I’ve been searching for a unique dress for a tiny flower girl. I just wondered if the tulle is itchy. Did you consider some kind of liner or is it not as bad as I’m thinking?

My daughter doesn’t mind it, but you could add a liner. It would protect her from not only the tulle, but also make it so if the tulle strips did move around she wouldn’t be showing off anything under the dress.
