Entrecard- To Keep or Not To Keep

Posted on 14. Apr, 2009 by Trish in Uncategorized

When I first started blogging I remember seeing the Entrecard widget on almost everyone’s blog I went to. I started asking around and was told that it was a good way to get traffic. You can advertise your blog on other blogs by paying with “credits” you get by dropping (basically leaving a virtual card that says, “I was here.”) or by having others advertise on your blog.

Sounded cool to me, so I joined the Entrecard network. I added the widget and began dropping on all the blogs I visited that had it too. I finally got enough to start advertising on others sites, and I was ecstatic when people started to advertise on my site. I loved seeing my price go up and know that people would “pay” that much just to be featured in that little widget on my blog.

My favorite thing about it was to see who had stopped by and dropped on me. At first I tried to visit everyone back, but I didn’t have time for that. But I love looking and seeing who visited my site, or who comes back often. I have stat trackers, but I like having a visual of that button to see who had come by.

I didn’t really notice getting much traffic to my blog through it however. Being that that was the reason I signed up, I thought maybe it’s because I’m new at it. Well, I’ve stuck with it, and still don’t really get much traffic from it.

Now they’ve started their paid ads. The one thing I really don’t like about it, is that we’re not getting paid to run those ads on our site. I know Entrecard says that down the road when they make enough money, they can start paying us for our credits, but I don’t know if it’s worth it! Especially when some of those paid ads show pictures of girls with large breasts and lots of cleavage. How is that relevant to my site at all? I do not approve those ads, since this is a family friendly site and I want to keep it that way.

I know a lot of my bloggy friends are done with Entrecard. Most have taken down the widget. I still have mine up, but I’m thinking about taking it down myself. If I signed up to get more traffic, and I’m not really getting more traffic from it, doesn’t it defeat the purpose?

I’m completely unhappy with the new service. I’ve noticed ads that I DON’T want on my blog show up there anyways. And what about the person advertising on my blog through their credits, what’s the point?!? They hardly get seen.

I took my Ecard widget down. Why should they make money off me for free. I also read that they were overriding people’s settings and putting up ads anyway. It’s my blog, and I want to know what content is on it. I think the best thing to do now is to get a network of friends and get a good blogroll going. I’ve noticed in Statcounter that people have been clicking buttons in my blogroll lately and visiting other sites.

I told Entrecard to take a hike. Why should they make money from our blogs and we get nadda?

I did find in Entrecard the way to not run ads unless you approve them but there are tons you have to click “deny” to just to clear up your homepage. I’m currently the ad running on your page :) I was so excited I could afford to be on someone’s blog I actually go to! :) I hardly ever click on people’s entrecards because it nevers keeps me signed in!! So I’m on the tail end of the excitement myself. I dunno – I guess I’m on the fence. Glad to know there are others out there with the same sentiment.

My Journey- They do say that unless you go in and set your settings so it will only show approved ads, you only have 24 hours to decline an ad. I went in and set it so I have to manually approve every ad, even the paid ones. I hadn’t heard that EC was overriding these settings. Thanks for letting me know!

I deleted my Entrecard account a few days ago for this very reason. For what it’s worth, I found your blog today via MomBuzz. I’ve been on Entrecard for around nine months and never found you that way. :) Anyway, the ads were too much trouble to keep deleting, in my opinion.

I have read a couple others posts like this too every since the pay ads began. For me, I still get a ton of traffic from my entrecard. When I log into my stats I always see the enter from url of entrecard. I also see some incoming people from entrecard in my livefeed. Needless to say, I am keeping mine for now. One other thing, though, is that I still drop like crazy too. Anywhere I go, if they have an entrecard, I drop. I go in once a week and drop back everyone who dropped me. So, maybe it only works if you are dropping like crazy as well.

I took mine down. I don’t like having their paid ads on my site. Especially when some of them may not be something that I agree with.

Leaving the widget up exposes you to inappropriate ads still running as many have reported. The reason is entrecard controls the widget and can over ride your settings which is what they have appeared to do to many. I know they say they won’t but the fact is they have. Just an FYI
