Internet Explorer and Blogs Don’t Mix!
Posted on 22. May, 2009 by Trish in Uncategorized
I used to use Internet Explorer as my browser all the time. Then last year I noticed that it would take FOREVER for blogs to load. Other sites would load just fine, it was just blogs that took forever. I decided to try out Mozilla Firefox instead, and the same pages would load in seconds.
Considering I visit more blogs than I do websites, I stuck with Firefox. I can use my Alexa toolbar with firefox just fine, even though I’ve heard that a lot of people using IE couldn’t get Alexa to work.
The past few days a lot of people have been getting error messages when trying to visit blogs in IE. They get a message saying “Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site http://blognamehere.com Operation Aborted.”
Well, that’s not good!
I’ve heard a lot of people on twitter and blog forums freaking out because they think it’s something with their site. Nope, it’s not. It’s with your browser. Just use something different than IE and you will be just fine.
You’d think that with as many blogs out there, Internet Explorer would actually work. Until they get their act together however, and fix these errors, I won’t be using them anytime soon.
As a side note, my site looks different in IE than it does in Firefox. It is correct in Firefox, but all messed up in IE. So if you are using IE, I encourage you to visit it in Firefox and see the difference.
I’m just glad there are other options out there for us blog hoppers to use! What browser do you use? Have you switched recently?

The Operation Aborted bug in IE occurs when some script tries to modify part of the page that may not be “completely” there yet (often times its an ad plugin or tag cloud that causes it)
See the bug report for details: http://webbugtrack.blogspot.com/2008/08/bug-404-operation-aborted-in-ie.html
However if you don’t support IE and suggest others move to Firefox or another browser I applaud your actions 100%. The sooner the majority of users ditch IE the sooner we can develop a web for everyone without having to re-build everything just for IE users.

The problem is mostly because your template is not compatible for cross browser. Search for it on Google and by adding a single piece of code you can make it compatible for IE

I quit using IE a LONG time ago. It’s been riddled with errors long before this, and it allows more viruses and spyware to get through than any other browser I’ve ever used. FireFox and its plugins definitely have the edge for me.

UGH I’ve wanted to bash my laptop into the wall so many times this week. I’m finding a couple glitches with Firefox too, maybe it’s a learning curve so I keep and IE window open and a Firefox window open LOL

I don’t have IE on my home computer because it’s a Mac, but I did notice the difference last night when I was at work on IE. Yeah, I’m partial to Safari and Firefox. Much better browsers and it makes your site look MUCH better

I have been using Firefox for a long time. It is clearly superior for the reason you mentioned and more. I’ve noticed that IE in general is slower loading all sites, slows down my computer when it is open and is more likely to allow viruses and stuff to get through.
So many pages will say “error on page” when viewed in IE, images never show up correctly and trying to design your site so it looks good in both is a nightmare.
I encourage everyone to switch to Firefox as soon as possible.
In addition to that, Firefox has a setting to save your tabs that you have open so when you close it and then re-open it, all of your favorite sites will open. This is especially good if you are in the middle of something and then your computer needs to be rebooted. You don’t need to go opening all your sites again, Firefox remembers them!

I use IE and noticed yesterday that message coming up all over blogs – But I am not technical so I thought I had some sort of virus so I ran a full virus scan. THAT IS SO FUNNY! I will definitely be switching now!

I’m still amazed anyone uses IE anymore, it’s full of all sorts of problems. I’m a FF user all the way!
