Mine has no problem doing a button hole. You could try putting a piece of tissue paper under the tulle, and then once you're done sewing you can rip it off. As for the ribbon, all ribbon is different. I used a grosgrain, which is a little thicker anyways. A satin ribbon will probably fold up.
