Moving From the Crib to a Toddler Bed

Moving From the Crib to a Toddler Bed

Posted on 31. Aug, 2009 by Trish in Family Life

That day has finally come where we have decided to move our daughter out of her crib.  We decided to just bring up one of our extra mattresses we store in the basement and put it on her floor.  That way when she falls off it’s not a big fall.  Our current crib was supposed to be a convertible crib, but  even with the mattress at the lowest setting, it is still so high off the ground.

But now we have to go buy the door handle thingymabobbers that stop her from being able to open her door.  This is a skill she has perfected recently.

climbing toddlerThen my neighbor mentioned to make sure we have plug covers and such too.  We never really child proofed her room, because the only time she was in it was to sleep.  In her crib.  That she still can’t get out of, even though she stands with one leg up above her head and over the side crying to get out.

She has started to take her diaper off anytime she wets, which creates a big mess.  Since she is in diapers only at night and nap time, we decided to just put one of her portable potties in there and see if she will use it when she has to go, as opposed to taking off her diaper constantly.

We’re off to the store later to buy the door thingys, plug covers, new sheets (since we only have one sheet set that fits that mattress), and some kind of plastic mattress protector.  Anything I’m forgetting?

We replaced some of our small outlet covers with the big ones, which sound good in concept, but our son was able to pull the big ones out! So…just a heads up that the bigger ones are easier for the toddlers to take out, which then renders the darn things useless.

Good luck w/the transition, I bet all goes well. :)

Making the move from crib to toddler bed can be tiresome. We were not so concern about the fact of them falling out of the bed but then having the freedom to get up whenever they wanted. With the addition of our third child we moved our second child from a crib right into a bunk bed. The oldest is on top. The two main problems we faced were the middle child getting up and putting toys in his bed and also the oldest thinking she had to wake the middle child up. This can really made for a grumpy time.

It will all work out. Good luck!

That was our biggest concern too. She can get up and move around and play. I think she finally fell asleep sometime after midnight last night. I’m hoping that after a few days the novelty will wear off and we’ll be back to normal.

Good luck with the transition! We moved my son when he was on the young side because we needed the crib for my daughter and were too cheap to buy another one. LOL. We actually went straight to a twin bed without a box spring so it would be lower. We also put one side against a wall and a bed rail on the other.

He only recently started getting out of his bed and that’s the issue I’m struggling with now. He’s been in his bed for almost a year and for the first 10 months would just stay on his bed until I went in to get him. I liked it better that way! Now I wake to him standing next to my bed. I definitely think I need to get those door knob thingies or figure out something else.

    Good luck!

We recently went through this at our house and my main recommendation is to take everything out of the room that you can. Just the bed. If they can play with it, crawl on it, use it as a weapon, etc. they will. Solitary confinement = sleep. Sounds like Gitmo, but it works.

Oh and pick up some earplugs for everyone in a three-block radius and four bottles of wine. One for each of your neighbors and one, most importantly, for you!

    Good luck!

  5. This is so coming! lol Behold, my future. :-) How old is your daughter? Mine is 16 months and hasn’t quite gotten to the point that she desperately wants out of her crib or pack’n'play – she actually likes them, but then she’s got me trained pretty well to come get her when she cries, lol. ;-)

I’m definitely interested in hearing about how it all goes!

She is 27 months. We waited for so long because she had no issues with the crib. We got one with really high sides, so she really could not get out.

She keeps going back to her cd player and messing around with the volume. She started knocking on the door a few minutes ago. No crying yet, which is an improvement from what it has been. We’ll see how long it actually takes her to fall asleep.

Make sure the furniture is strapped to the wall. I have been on hubby to do this forever and he finally did it this weekend. I am breathing easier. My son is still in his crib but has gotten out a couple times and he loves to open drawers and the dressers will tip if not secured to the wall. I also agree about plug covers and make sure no blind cords are hanging down. I am not sure when we’ll convert Finley’s crib into a toddler bed. Good luck! P.S. I love your header, it looks great with your new background the way it is.

  7. I just realized you said you were going to put a knob cover on her door so she can’t open it, so you won’t need the gate. lol.

  8. Good luck! We will be doing this with the twins soon since Luke learned how to climb out of the crib last night.

i think you pretty much have everything covered. Places like Target and BRU should have waterproof mattress pad covers for crib/toddler mattresses.

When my oldest made the switch, we also put a gate in his doorway because we didn’t want him wondering around the hall during the night.
