Baby Blankets and Applique

Baby Blankets and Applique

I have been sewing up a ton trying to get everything ready for the boy child that is coming NEXT MONTH!!  Whoo-hoo!

Well, one of the things I had to do was sew up some baby blankets.  I hate how most of the store bought receiving blankets are rectangular.  I can’t swaddle a baby with a rectangular blanket.  I need a square one.  I learned this with my daughter.  I sewed a few up for her and love the style.

My favorite way to sew them is doing them as a self binding blanket.  I recently discovered this and decided it was so much easier than my method of folding the edges over, ironing them, pinning, and finally topstitching.  I would make a tutorial for you, but there are already so many out there, so I thought I’d share with you a few of my favorite.  They are all basically the same, but some describe different aspects better.

I usually use two layers of flannel for them, but I decided to do some with a cotton woven to make it more lightweight, especially for the middle of summer.

I decided to try my hand at applique to add a little something more to these.  The frog I did with a straight stitch all the way around and when I wash it the edges will fray a little.  The elephant I wanted to use a satin stitch but my practice run turned out horrible!  So I turned to trusty google and found a couple more tutorials on applique that helped me figure it out.

Yay for tutorials!  :D

I love the quilts! I wish I knew how to do that type of work. Good luck with the little one!

Yeah, it doesn’t really make sense that they are square. Those are so adorable, you are one talented girl.

Your blankets are awesome. You are right about needing to be square. Much better. Nice job!
