Disney’s Tangled Rapunzel Cake
Posted on 20. Jan, 2011 by Trish in Crafts
I’ve been wanting to play around with fondant some more in cake decorating but haven’t really had the chance. Then my sister asked me to help her come up with a cool cake for her soon-to-be step daughter who just turned 4. She had requested a Tangled Cake.
I of course jumped right in and started googling “Disney’s Tangled Cakes” and found a few ideas. I showed them to her and she told me what she liked and what she didn’t like, and this is what we came up with.
Not too shabby for my first time making a larger cake, huh? I also used Marshmallow fondant, which I’d never made before, so that was an experience too! I did realize that you don’t have to add all of the powdered sugar it calls for. I had the right consistency, and then tried to add more and more powdered sugar, and it just became super stiff. Then I had to add more water and shortning, and kept going back and forth until I finally got something that worked. Although, I think it would have worked even better had I just left out that last cup or two of powdered sugar.
I also found another marshmallow fondant recipe that I want to try because it’s supposed to be pliable, which would be good.
Another tip I have for MMF is to not make it too thin. For some reason I thought it had to be super thin, so it was tearing an ripping like crazy! Hm, yeah, now I know. I used the strawberry flavored marshmallows because I knew the majority of the cake was to be pink. Then I wanted to try different flavors, so on one layer I added some cheesecake flavoring to it (YUMMY!) and another layer I added some tutti-frutti. Even my sister who doesn’t like fondant said it was good. The kids ate the frosting off the cake, but left the cake, so I think that says something about the taste too. It passed the kid test, right?
One more tip that I read about was when rolling out your fondant to use freezer paper underneath so you don’t have to grease your counters all up, and it worked WONDERFULLY! It didn’t stick at all, and when I was done I just threw it away and my table was all clean.
If anyone is wondering how I made it, I just did an 8 inch cake, and a 6 inch cake, covered them in buttercream icing, and then put pink fondant over the top. Then I made the roof out of rice crispy treats and covered it in fondant. I made this fondant really thin because I wanted the texture of the rice crispy treats to show through.
Then I took a toothpick and drew the stones on the side of the two cakes. Then I used some extra fondant, made it brown and created the window, and then took leftover buttercream and tinted it green and piped it on to look like vines. The flowers were just some flower shaped sprinkles I had laying around that I pushed into the buttercream. Then I stacked them up, with the top cake being more to the back to allow room for the figurines, and that is it! It was pretty simple, but still turned out super cute.
I’m not sure where my sister found these exact figurines, but I did find this Disney Deluxe Tangled Rapunzel Figure Play Set on Amazon that would have worked even better because the figures are all plastic- there is no hair to worry about getting frosting on. And no one wants to get a piece of fake doll hair in their bite of cake, right?
Here is the tower all assembled without the figurines added yet, so you can get an idea of what the window actually looked like:

This cake is so adorable and looks like I can give it a try. What type of cake did you use? I think box cake would be too crumbly? What is your trick?

I use boxed cake. It works just fine! If you want to make it go a little farther, add one extra egg and a package of instant cheesecake pudding. It makes it super moist too. But I’ve also done it without adding any extras.

I just kind of molded it. Nothing specific. It’s made with rice crispy treats so it’s easy to mold.

I absolutely love this cake idea!!! I am going to try it for my daughters brithday on friday however, I have never worked with fondant before so I’m a little worried. Any suggestions? I bought the premade stuff…will that work just as well as the homemade fondant? I found the figurines at walmart. I am so excited to try this. Oh, did you make two 8 inch cakes and two 6 inch cakes and stack them? I am new at birthday cake making. Thanks for the idea and the directions.

I bet the pre-made stuff would work better than the homemade. The one time I used it it was a little easier to work with. I’m just cheap and prefer the taste of marshmallow fondant to regular stuff. Yes, I did 2 of each size and stacked them. Actually I think the 6 inch I just used a Pyrex dish I had and it was thick enough I didn’t need 2 layers. Just go with what looks best!

Hi, I am making this cake for my daughters party tomorrow. I made the mm fondant last night. I have never made it before. It was easy, I just hope it isn’t too dry. I guess I will find out when I roll it out. I see 2 holes on the top layer. Did you use dowel rods for support? If so, did you push them through both layers? I also found the figurine set at walmart. I am going to use a plastic funnel to shape the top. Thank you so much for this tutorial. The cake is adorable. I hope mine turns out as well as yours!

I did put some dowels in the two layers, but since I assembled the cake there I just put some in the bottom layer, and then put the top layer on it, and I put a few in the top layer for the roof to sit on. You very well could put the dowel all the way through to keep it from shifting in transportation. They were more for keeping the cakes from smushing themselves.

great job on the cake! I make most of my children’s (even friends and family)cakes also. I have made a castle, a horsehead, a transformers cake, a pirate ship, a hula girl with a volcano, flip-flops, and many others.
